Mercedes unveils the new Mercedes SLS AMG GT

Mercedes-Benz have unveiled the new Mercedes SLS AMG GT, a new, improved version of the Mercedes SLS AMG. At first glance, it almost seems unchanged from the old SLS AMG, as the only notable differences in terms of design include a darkened headlight and taillights, and the red brake callipers. More differences can be spotted from the radiator grille and the side mirrors, but the real update came in the form of performance.

The latest Mercedes model, set to be released both in the form of coupe and roadster, has improved the horsepower of its 6,208cc V8 engine, taking it up to an impressive 591hp. Thanks to its significant increase in power, it can hit 100km/h in 3.7 seconds, which is 0.1 second (more impressive than what is sounds like) faster than what the previous model could manage, and hit 200km/h in 11.2 seconds whilst its top speed is electronically limited at 320km/h – a 3km/h increase.  Maximum revolutions per minute (6,800rpm) and torque at 4,750rpm (66.3kgm) remain unchanged from its predecessor, but the responsiveness of its accelerator pedal has been enhanced. The AMG Speed Shift DCT-7 has considerably reduced shifting time and strengthened the automatic double declutching system. The size of the front tyres (265/35) is smaller than the rear ones (295/30), meaning the centre of gravity will always be on the front of the car. Last but not least, the new AMG Ride Control Performance Suspension, is perhaps the most vital addition to the new model. With the elimination of ‘Comfort Mode’, which was the default setting for the previous SLS AMG, drivers can choose either the ‘Sport Mode’ or the ‘Sport Plus Mode’. The former is recommended while driving on wavy routes and the latter is designed for smooth routes.

The exterior of the car divides opinion, especially the gull-winged model, as some feel the car has an awkward look with its gull-wing doors closed. But this is something that depends on personal preference and, much like pretty much anything in life, not everyone can be satisfied with everything. But if you are one of those who believe that the beauty on the inside is more important the SLS AMG GT is definitely a great choice, as it boasts a sporty – and equally luxurious – design. The interior can be boosted even further by choice, as an optional extra of AMG Designo Exclusive STYLE Leather is available.

Optional extras for this latest super sports car by Mercedes include the AMG Carbon-fibre exterior mirrors, Carbon-fibre engine compartment cover, Interior Carbon-fibre package, Ceramic high-performance composite braking system, Performance media, 10-spoke forged wheels, Carbon-fibre trim, AIRSCARF for roadster, and Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG Surround sound system.

The Mercedes SLS AMG GT is priced at just over 160,000 GBP.
